How to Reach Chitrakoot – Road, Train, Bus & Travel Tips for Pilgrims
Chitrakoot is one of the most important pilgrimage towns in North India. It sits on the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and is connected by road, train, and through nearby airports. Whether you are coming from Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Lucknow, or Varanasi, getting to Chitrakoot is not difficult at all — you just need to know the right route.
This guide covers everything — distances, routes, train options, where to stay, and some practical tips to make your trip smooth.
How to Reach Chitrakoot by Road
Travelling to Chitrakoot by road is the most flexible option. You can stop at small sites along the way, manage your luggage, and travel at your own speed. The roads are mostly good, though some stretches closer to Chitrakoot get narrower.
From Prayagraj to Chitrakoot
This is the most common route for pilgrims doing the full circuit. Prayagraj to Chitrakoot is about 130 to 135 km by road via NH35 and State Highway 7. The drive takes around 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic.
The route passes through Banda district and the landscape slowly changes from plains to the Vindhya foothills as you get closer to Chitrakoot. There is no expressway on this route yet, though a Chitrakoot Link Expressway connecting to the Bundelkhand Expressway has been planned by the UP government.
From Ayodhya to Chitrakoot
Ayodhya to Chitrakoot is around 260 to 270 km and takes approximately 6 to 7 hours by road. The common route goes via Prayagraj — so if you are doing the full Ayodhya–Prayagraj–Chitrakoot circuit, you will naturally pass through all three cities in order.
Other Cities
| Starting City | Distance to Chitrakoot | Approx Road Time |
|---|---|---|
| Prayagraj | 130–135 km | 3–4 hours |
| Ayodhya | 260–270 km | 6–7 hours |
| Lucknow | 250 km | 5–6 hours |
| Varanasi | 265–270 km | 5–6 hours |
| Banda | 75 km | 1.5–2 hours |
| Satna (MP) | 80 km | 1.5–2 hours |
Private cab vs. bus: State buses run between Prayagraj, Banda, and Chitrakoot, but they can be slow and crowded. For pilgrims, especially families or those travelling with elderly members, a private AC cab is much more comfortable. You can stop where you want, load and unload your luggage easily, and the driver handles everything.
How to Reach Chitrakoot by Train
Chitrakoot is well connected by train. The main railway station is Chitrakoot Dham Karwi (station code: CKTD), which sits on the Manikpur–Satna rail line. It is about 8 to 12 km from the town center, so you will need an auto-rickshaw or local taxi for the final stretch.
Trains from Prayagraj to Chitrakoot
There are 14+ daily trains running from Prayagraj Junction (PRYJ) to Chitrakoot Dham Karwi (CKTD). The fastest is the Vande Bharat Express (26506), which covers the distance in just 2 hours 5 minutes. It departs Prayagraj at 7:50 AM and reaches Chitrakoot by 9:55 AM (runs 6 days a week, not Thursday).
| Train | Departure | Arrival | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vande Bharat Express (26506) | 7:50 AM | 9:55 AM | 2 hrs 5 mins |
| Bundelkhand Express (11108) | 9:15 PM | 12:01 AM | ~2 hrs 46 mins |
| PRYJ GWL Express (11802) | 6:05 AM | 10:43 AM | ~4 hrs 38 mins |
Train ticket prices start from around ₹150 for sleeper class and go up to ₹1,190 for AC. Book at least a few days in advance, especially during festival months.
Nearest Railway Station Note
Two stations serve Chitrakoot:
- Chitrakoot Dham Karwi (CKTD) — most trains stop here, about 8–12 km from town
- Karwi (KWV) — slightly closer, but fewer trains
From either station, auto-rickshaws and shared tempos are available to the main ghat area.
How to Reach Chitrakoot by Air
There is no airport in or near Chitrakoot itself. The nearest airport is Prayagraj (Bamrauli Airport), which is about 130 to 141 km away. From Prayagraj Airport, you can hire a cab directly to Chitrakoot — the drive takes 3 to 4 hours.
Varanasi Airport is another option, but it is around 260 km from Chitrakoot, so Prayagraj is the better choice for air travellers.
Where to Stay in Chitrakoot
Chitrakoot is not a city full of luxury hotels, and honestly, that is part of its charm. Most visitors are pilgrims who want clean, simple accommodation close to the ghats and temples. Here are your main options:
Budget Dharamshalas near Ramghat
These are run by religious trusts and ashrams. They are very affordable — some are even free for pilgrims — and most are walking distance from Ramghat. Facilities are basic but clean. Good for solo travellers or those on a tight budget.
Standard Hotels near Kamadgiri and Ramghat
Mid-range hotels with attached bathrooms, hot water, and room service. Rates are reasonable, typically ₹800 to ₹2,500 per night depending on the room type. These are the best choice for families and couples who want a bit more comfort.
MP Tourism Guest Houses
If you plan to visit the Madhya Pradesh side of Chitrakoot (Gupt Godavari, for example), MP Tourism has clean and affordable guest houses in the area. Book in advance through the MP Tourism website, especially during the October–March season.
How many nights should you stay? Most pilgrims doing the Ayodhya–Prayagraj–Chitrakoot circuit find 1 night in Chitrakoot enough to cover all the main sites comfortably. If you want to do the Kamadgiri Parikrama at sunrise AND attend the evening aarti on separate days, consider 2 nights.
| Stay Type | Location | Approx Cost per Night | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget Dharamshalas | Near Ramghat | Free – ₹500 | Solo pilgrims, budget travellers |
| Standard Hotels | Near Kamadgiri / Ramghat | ₹800 – ₹2,500 | Families, couples |
| MP Tourism Guest Houses | Chitrakoot (MP side) | ₹1,000 – ₹2,000 | Those visiting Gupt Godavari |
Tips Before You Visit Chitrakoot
These are simple, practical things that most first-time visitors wish they had known before going:
- 1. Carry cash. Most small shops, prasad stalls, and local autos near the temples do not reliably accept UPI or cards. Keep some cash handy — even ₹500 to ₹1,000 in small notes makes a big difference.
- 2. Wear comfortable slip-on footwear. You will remove your shoes at every single temple and at the Kamadgiri Parikrama path. Shoes with laces slow you down. Slip-ons or Kolhapuris work much better here.
- 3. Start your day early — very early. The Kamadgiri Parikrama is best done between 6 AM and 8 AM. The air is cool, the crowd is thin, and the forest sounds are peaceful. If you wait until 10 AM, the heat and the crowds both increase significantly.
- 4. Avoid July and August if possible. The Mandakini River rises considerably during monsoon. Some ghat steps go underwater, and a few smaller roads near Chitrakoot can get waterlogged. The sites are still accessible, but the experience is much less comfortable. October to March is the ideal window.
- 5. Gupt Godavari requires wading. Inside the caves, you walk through knee-deep water. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet, or carry a change of outfit. Most people find it fun, but it helps to be prepared.
- 6. Download offline maps. Mobile network inside some temple areas and forest routes near Chitrakoot can be weak. Download Google Maps offline for the Chitrakoot area before you leave your hotel.
Plan Chitrakoot as Part of a Full Pilgrimage
